SEO: What is it? I have spent a lot of time over the last few years talking around SEO. But I realized today, I am assuming everyone know what SEO is. So today, lets talk the basics about SEO and the small business owner.

What is SEO?

If you have ever attended one of my presentations, you know I briefly discuss this as part of my introduction...(hint: you can book me to speak with your group)

Here are the basics.

  • Traditional SEO: focuses on backlinking to other sites, HOPEFULLY, relevant to what you do. The term keyword stuffing comes from this type of SEO, where you find the mainstream words everyone uses, regardless if they will buy from you. The key metric is increase in organic traffic. They are not concerned with conversion.

  • Content Based SEO: Focuses on your Ideal Client language to create website copy and building a strategy around your ideal client to increase conversion rate, not just organic traffic.

What to Choose?

Honestly? Both. One of the benefits of Traditional SEO is it's focus on the backend that no one ever sees. If you are using a blend of Traditional with Content, like I do, you know Google only crawls your site with a mobile device. This means if your website does not load in 0 to 3.8 seconds on a mobile, Google won't send you as much traffic. If your website can load in under 3.8 seconds AND your content brings in your ideal client? Now you have success.

The Metrics

By the numbers, Traditional SEO has much LOWER standards. Here is a breakdown:

  • Traditional SEO: Click-Through-Rate (CTR) averages 1.9%. Conversion rate is good if between 2% and 5%, flow through rate on the homepage should be 40% to 50%

  • A Blend of Content and Traditional: CTR should average 20%. Conversion Rate should be a minimum of !0%. Flow through from the home page should be a minimum of 50%. My clients generally see 75% to 100% flow through.

What a difference blending the two can be! This is why Small Business owners need to focus on their client and user experience to achieve the highest possible results.
